Field Trips 2006

Our club schedules a field trip, usually to a location within the state, on a Saturday each month. An occasional overnight trip is scheduled also.

Email your suggestions for field trips.

February

18th, field trip to Blanchard Springs.  Robert went up to Newton County Monday and hiked down to Glory Hole and it is bone dry, not a drop of water at all. So the February field trip will be to Blanchard Springs Caverns. This is NOT the photo tour where they allow tripods. But will be hand held with flashes only.  We will meet at McDonalds in Morgan at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday Feb 18th and leave by 7:15. It takes about 2 1/2 hours or so to get to the Caverns.

There is a $10.00 admission charge with Seniors 62 or over and Golden Aged Passport holders getting in for $5.00. For more information go to :

March

4th.  The AOPC February field trip will be March 4th to to the Little Rock Zoo. There was not enough time to arrange early admission and animals brought out so we will meet at the front gate at 9:00 a.m. which is the time that the zoo normally opens up. This way we will go in together and can stay in groups just what ever we want to do. The annual zoo photo contest sponsored by our club and Bedford's will be held on April 15th and this will be a great time for everybody to get their photos that they want to enter in the contest.

25th, field trip to Garvan Woodland Gardens.  Meet at the commuter parking lot at I-630 and Shackleford by 8:00 a.m. and leave shortly after. The Gardens opens at 9:00 and we should be there by 9:15 for those people that want to meet us there. According to their bloom calendar the daffodils, tulips, kurume and species azaleas, dogwoods, Japanese camellias and wildflowers will be blooming.

April

TBA - Trip to Dagmar Wildlife Management Area, located near Biscoe, AR. About one hour from Little Rock, east on I-40.

May

13th, to Cossatot Falls.  Meet at the commuter parking lot at I-630 and Shackleford at 7am.  Should be plenty of water and kayaks and canoes and plenty of spring foliage and wildflowers.

June

10th, to the Memphis Zoo. We will meet at the McDonalds in the Other Center Shopping Center across from McCain Mall at 7:00 a.m. Little Rock Zoo members will be able to get in for half price with their membership card and photo ID.

July

22nd, field trip to Bayou Bartholomew in Pine Bluff, AR.  Meet at the commuter parking lot at I-630 and Shackleford at 7am.

August

19th, field trip to Mount Nebo, Dardanelle, AR.  Meet at the McDonald's in Morgan at 7AM and carpool from there.  We will just walk one way on the trail. We will need to drop off a car or two at the "bench overlook" on the way up the mountain. Our hike will start at the visitor center on top of the mountain then we'll walk downhill to the cars we dropped off, then ferry back to the other cars. Bring a sack lunch and we can picnic on top of the mountain. For those that want to stay a while, maybe the hang gliders will be flying off of sunrise point during the afternoon. And if you really want to stay up there you can shoot the sunset from sunset point. There are coke machines and bathrooms at the visitor center and there is even a swimming pool up there too.  Click here for a park map.

September

23rd, The Butterfly Place in Branson, MO.  Ernie Decker suggests everyone meet there at 1 pm and all go in together. People can work out carpool arrangements among themselves. Some may also want to stay Friday and Saturday night. The Butterfly Place can be done in one day by meeting at 1 pm.

[Editor’s note: An internet search on “Branson” and “butterfly” gives many hits, including information on places to stay. The Butterfly Place web site is http://www.butterflyplace.com/.]

October

21st, Delta Rivers Nature Center, Pine Bluff

Visit http://www.deltarivers.com/ for more information on the Delta Rivers Nature Center.

November

4th, Pedestal Rocks. This ia early but hopefully fall colors will be good then. We will go to Pedestal Rocks (north of Dover on hwy 16) for the “official” field trip. Then for those who want, we could go up to the Ponca-Boxley area and maybe see some elk that evening if we’re lucky. Ernie doesn't have all the details worked out yet, but plan on  meeting at McDonalds in Morgan at 7 am. (We’ll be back to regular time by then so it’ll be light a little sooner on the clock.) It’s a pretty good ways up there and we’ll go up scenic Hwy 7, so we may want to stop on the way to shoot something, too.

December

14th, Dinner table at the monthly meeting
